How to prevent injury while running? It turns out, what you wear on your feet can have an enormous influence on your ability to dodge injury, especially knee injury, during running. In this video, Christopher McDougall and Dr. Daniel Lieberman outline how traditional shod running may place big obstacles in the path to running injury free!

  • T-72k1
T-72k1 3 года назад The problem is that most soles on peoples feet have never seen tough ground in their entire life. If we had never worn any type of shoes, the bottoms of our feet would be a half inch of thick callus that would act as a protective layer from rocks and sharp objects. so when you go out there with your virgin feet, your going to be in a lot of pain.
  • Luke Slywalker
Luke Slywalker Неделю назад @Max Pain Well, your problem is obvious. You are ignoring a VERY important piece of advice: Go slow. This means run slower as well as take a while to adjust to the new running style. Depending on how strong your feet and calf muscles are it can take from a few weeks to a few months to adjust to barefoot running. Your calf and foot muscles are small and you are forcing them to support a huge amount of weight. I also assumed the transition would go quickly, but I kept getting calf and occasionally foot injuries. So I'm doing walk-run intervals until my I feel I'm ready to go longer and harder.
  • Shavin McCrotch
Shavin McCrotch 2 недели назад My feet don’t have very thick calluses. I’m always barefoot and it doesn’t hurt. Sure, if you step on a single pebble or a bottle cap it’s going to hurt like hell. I don’t care who you are or what your feet are like. But on gravel and rugged terrain, you just have to watch your strike. Feel the surface for projectiles before dropping all your weight on that foot. Put those muscles, toes, tarsals, and metatarsals to work keeping weight off of projectiles. I don’t think the technique is very effective at speed, but you get fast enough to do it at a pretty good walking pace.
  • L Martinez
L Martinez 4 недели назад "T-72k1" Most of us , after inheriting "soft feet" from our parents and other previous generations who have worn shoes for several centuries now, are not going to just go out barefoot and "train" our feet not to need shoes and socks. We will become a generation with foot injuries as never before seen.

Tanner Goolsby 10 месяцев назад +Max Pain It's because your feet are so used to padded shoes. Try going for walks barefoot on grassy/dirt paths and what not at a park or something. Gotta work your way up to the run, can't just do it from the get go when your feet have been caged up for 20+ years. If you're having so many injuries it's because of your form not because of barefoot running
  • LancesArmorStriking
LancesArmorStriking 10 месяцев назад Max Pain We invented shoes for warmth... they were never meant to cushion our soles, just stop them from freezing in ancient Europe. tomaso 7 месяцев назад No, you don´t need any cushionig while runnig barefoot or in minimalistic shoes. Foot work as spring. But if you wear shoes and/or you heelstrike, the natural spring doesn´t work properly - this causes the problems. So paradoxycaly when you run in shoes and/or you heelstrike, it is better to run on the soft ground (shoe cushioning alone is not enough), but if you run barefoot and you midstrike, you can run on asphalt - your feet will manage it :) All of this is my own experience.

I learned about altras on my quest to find a shoe I could run in without half the blisters I was getting! Literally I bought them for my first trail marathon south downs marathon and not a single blister or pain! They are zero drop so encourage a mid/forefoot strike and has a toebox to allow the toes to splay out naturally (all altra have a thing called footshape). Now I have found a perfect combo. Injinji running socks with my altra lonepeak 3.5. never have issues. I will say they take some getting used to with the zero drop. Most people can't though, and running barefoot automatically forces the runner to run on their forefoot. so for someone like you and me, this isn't a problem because we can run on our forefoot in shoes. it's the perfect combination.

GoD _ MoDE 232 6 месяцев назад Just practice in track spikes that are meant for 400m cause most don’t aggressively put you on your toes but that’s up to price range and brand selection. Also mid-distance spikes are good all around just not less then 200m and not more then 3 miles

Dr. Up 10 месяцев назад The Raw Earth Under My Bare Feet I'm pretty sure you score won't last for ever. With time, you'll see, it's not a viable option. The fact that you can't understand that some people actually need shoes to be able to run without any consequence is really disapointing.
  • Banana Man
Banana Man 10 месяцев назад Dr. Up I think you're wrong again haha. It is for everybody because it's completely natural. Most people don't even try or give up early because it does take time. The proof is in the pudding really. Everyone I've introduced to it personally has thrived and I've been barefoot running for over a decade with not one single injury!!!! Internal injury that is haha ...I am human and lose focus sometimes and step on a rock. Best of luck.
  • Dr. Up
Dr. Up 10 месяцев назад The Raw Earth Under My Bare Feet I didn't say you were wrong or I was right. I said it may had been the solution for you. But not for everybody, because I for example can't. That' all, none of us two is wrong. We have different needs and so we have different solutions. And I advised you to be careful when you spread your solution, don't forget we all have different needs.
  • Banana Man
Banana Man 10 месяцев назад Dr. Up completely wrong I'm afraid. I also use some footwear but footwear with any cushioning at all is detrimental to joints, especially knees. There are hundreds of nerves in the feet for a reason and that is so the brain can respond to them and tell the body how to adjust and move according to the grounds surface or terrain etc....If there is any cushioning the foot is always going to be searching for the ground, pushing harder into the shoe and creating more impact on joints. I used to have massive knee and back problems and basically gave up running and then I found barefoot and minimalistic running.
  • Dr. Up
Dr. Up 10 месяцев назад The Raw Earth Under My Bare Feet the problem is not shoes the problem is the way people use them. People have to learn how to run. If you run in the good way and you use good running shoes you'll be better than with just only one of those two. From somebody who has bad knee injuries, I can tell you running sneakers are usefull. Please do not help breaking anymore legs than this idea of "Less is more" has already broken by telling everybody to run your way. I'm glad you can run bare feet, if you want to, but no everybody phisically can, and it would be a shame to cause injuries this way.

John Marshall 2 года назад @Mighty I do a ton of shoe research… maybe a little TOO much. LOL! I love shoes. Nike Frees are only minimalist compared to all the other Nike running shoes. However, they are not minimalist when ompared to true minimalist shoes like Vivobarefoot and Skora. Nike Frees lack a wide toe box and have too much cushioning. Check out Skora and Vivobarefoot running shoes. Vivabarefoot is crazy minimal with only 2mm of rubber and no insole. Skora have a tad bit of cushioning but also have a wide toe box.
  • matt
matt 3 года назад They encourage a natural forefoot strike. There heel drop is only 4mm for the 3.0, compared to traditional shoes which often have around 12mm, there is much less cushioning but still enough so concrete won't screw you, and it's extremely flexible.
