Mobile Auto Bodywork & Paint Job (fixing a dent with a uni-spotter)

Published on Oct 28, 2015 4,950,046 views

This paint-job that was done on October 25, 2015: The video is meant to be a teaching video that shows and explains what is happening by means of questions and answers. Before Gerald and I made this video we discussed how we should do it: Whether he would constantly be talking and explaining what he does, or whether we should do an interview style where I would keep asking questions to which he would respond. We decided to go the second route. So back off haters!
For all those who are still annoyed by my questions, please keep in mind that the idea was to ask the kinds of questions that someone might have who has never done this kind of work before. The questions are meant as prompts for Gerald to help someone who is new to this to learn from Gerald’s answers and better understand what he is doing in each of the steps.

Chris Hall Год назад Just wanted to chime in and say that I have been painting cars since 1994 and consider myself a professional automotive refinish technician. This guy knocked it out of the park. Not only did he do a pretty bang up job pulling that dent out(way better than I could) but he was able to fight the elements and provide a very acceptable finish...without a paint booth. I admire this guy for his perseverance and his ability to stay cool while basically being interviewed during the entire process. All of his methods and knowledge were solid. Spraying technique needed some work, but he got it done. So what he didnt have the "right" tools, the important thing was he made them work. I would much rather have this guy working for me than any sheltered body shop baby. This guy is a winner and i hope he does well for himself. Oh and to buff and polish the rest of the car....not a body shop on this planet would do that at no charge. Im impressed!!

Jonathan Muphree 2 недели назад I think all things considered he did fairly decent job considering how low-dollar of a repair it is. Around here half the hack shops would have barely pulled it out just slapped that Bondo right in. I do agree he shouldn't have put Bondo over top of paint he should have filled in the Deep areas than glazed over the paint or ground more of that out. I loved the trick of using the hammer claw to pull on his pins. Never seen that one. I think the guys should get a medal just because of the awkwardness of being filmed and watched the whole time. Some customer did that to me I tell him to GTFO.

This took place in Canada, do you know the regulations there? Where i am from there are so many shade tree painters not using filters in their so-called paint booths, heck even a well known local bodyshop i worked in for a year had no filters on their exhausts. Noone ever questioned them. You should go tree-hug somewhere else.

Chris Hall 7 месяцев назад @Kaysauto52 repair All I can say is the "proof is in the pudding", that's why I posted my public facebook profile so that everyone could have a look at my work, and how I was able to improvise with building a paintbooth out of everyday building materials from Lowe's. I like educating people on automotive refinishing when I see they have no idea nor have they ever had to paint in these conditions. I've had to against my better judgment and hated it, but it can be done with a little extra effort. And those who make a living doing it, I admire those people, especially when they turn out like Gerald's work here. I cringed in a few places during this video but the end result was top notch.

Macaroni Jack 8 месяцев назад Every body tech is different, but I am a firm believer in over just metal. In restoration work, you have to know the condition of the metal you are trying to blend, aka bubble rust from the inside, and another reason is UV damage of the old clear coat. Best to be sure it doesnt lift the paint in a few months and have an angry customer and a wrecked reputation. So i skip the short cuts.

So let’s do a run down 1 don’t pull dents with a roofing hammer 2 the reason it “went back down” is because he made the metal oil can. 3 applied the filler incorrectly and also mixed it incorrectly. 4 don’t ever wet sand filler, it’s like a sponge. I guarantee it had already surfaced rusted by the time he primed it. 4 epoxy before surfacer as primer porous and will allow moisture past. 5 1500 grit is not acceptable for any paint, 800 is the absolute finest for mechanical adhesion. 6 god I hope that’s water base paint he added water to and hope he didn’t use tap or bottled water. 7 don’t use the same gun for base and Clear. 8. Promise there’s a tons of mottling in the base coat and don’t use a heat gun for drying waterborne. 9 Don’t ever tell the customer you don’t know if you bought the right color. God there is so much more but I can’t watch anymore... been an ase tech for 15 years, icar certified for 8 and painter for 7. This is NOT how to do this nonsense.

  • Chris Hall
Chris Hall 10 месяцев назад Its basically used for filling tiny pinholes and quick fix right before priming. Its lacquer based and easy to sand, problem is that it shrinks, so the less you use, the better off you are. Gerald used it as you described Blake Slocum which is not something I would advise, but hey, it worked out for him.
  • Blake Slocum
Blake Slocum 10 месяцев назад Chris, do you know where I can contact this guy? I would either one, like to hire him, or two know where he gets his materials to complete this myself. I mean with the thing that pulls out dents I'll probably just use a rubber mallet on the inside of the fender, but for paint refinishing I will need help, as basically the entire car will be painted. I'm just wondering.. should I spraypaint panel by panel? or the whole thing on the car or off the car? and should I repaint the trim black or buy new trim? or the tan-colored accent decal running the skirt of the car replaced? weather seals? I have no clue!
  • Blake Slocum
Blake Slocum 10 месяцев назад I don't know about you, but I sure would! haha, anyone who goes through that much trouble to paint a dog house would make me honored to let them paint it.. (my car that is)
  • Blake Slocum
Blake Slocum 10 месяцев назад Red glaze I thought was basically the 'finish' for the body filler, think of it as a finer sand paper to get rid of the rougher sand paper marks. Surprisingly good analogy I made there haha.
  • Blake Slocum
Blake Slocum 10 месяцев назад Now who can I contact to pay this guy or you to come and do this to my car on a slightly bigger scale?? Like I would probably pay $2000? I don't know what it's worth so I'm probably wrong. No dents nearly as big as that one, but the clearcoat is gone on most of the car, surprisingly low rust, the car is basically a matte red haha.
  • Chris Hall
Chris Hall 10 месяцев назад Robert Spencer what are you talking about? "I panel painted a quarter panel"?? When did you see me panel paint? Just for the record that wasn't me in the video and for you information you can panel paint, this is actually my preferred method of tri-coat paints. Now Gerald here did basically panel paint this quarter which I wouldn't have done, but the more of the car you paint in these conditions, the more likely you are to have to fight the environment. Panel painting is a thing, but you better be damn sure the color is right.

scracer24c 10 месяцев назад Chris Hall Sorry But, If you’ve been doing this since 94 and you couldn’t have done the same, You are NOT A PROFESSIONAL.... This was about as easy as it gets, Nothing too hard at all and the guys still needed 3 coats of filler. We own The largest Collision Center in the area so I know what I am talking about. I have nephews and cousins kids that are only teenagers now and they could have fixed this just as good if not better. I’m not knocking the guy at all because I think he did a fair job, I just don’t think he’s the greatest as I see and do this stuff daily.... I’m gonna bet you DONT do this everyday and you are just making stuff up.... Leave this to the real Professionals Okay! 🤦‍♂️

Adam Kalman 11 месяцев назад Martin Jennings the bottom line is that the quality vs price and convenience was outstanding you act like if he would have taken it to a professional body shop that took 3 days they would have done better NO they would have had the floor sweeper working on it while he was not driving it to get donuts and coffee for the other guys they wouldnt have touched any other areas of the car with out charging you another thousand per scratch they would have overspray on the window , door , roof and taillight and when you wanted the mistakes repaired it would sit in there shot for 30 more days. I have done better work with Chinese door skins and a can of rustoleum than a 7,000$ hood and bumper repair / paint INSURANCE paid on my 01 ram cummins sport and those dumb fucks put my sport sticker on crooked This guy did a great job considering the circumstances your obviously still angry that Hillary Lost

Supreme Neanderthal 11 месяцев назад yea,wet sanding body filler, thats a good one. No polyester body filler is water proof. And yes lacquer fillers and primers is quite caveman stuff.

TsevenC 11 месяцев назад No way Chris Hall, @ time 32:26 the reflection on the quarter panel clearly shows that this guy has not sanded the surface properly, i can still see lots of area of reflection between the sanding marks, this job will in time fail, 1 year, 2 years, hard to say, but he has not set up the ideal surface conditions for permanent adhesion of the primer/paint

Chris Hall 11 месяцев назад rstreets quiz me..you want to see my work??..I have hundreds of photos to prove it. I can back up any thing I say about my knowledge of the paint and body industry. I'm not a body guy, I am a pure painter. I get jealous of combo guys who can do it all like Gerald, however I could paint you or anyone you throw at me under the bus. Can you back up your talk??? Guess what, I can. I will gladly provide proof of my work.

Michael O 11 месяцев назад If by 'swelling' you actually mean shrinking, then you're correct! They're called sinkbacks or shrinkbacks. The 'solvents' dry out of the paint over time shrinking the overall thickness. That 1K blade(spot) putty is meant to go OVER primer, NOT under it. I've never seen anyone use a 'claw' hammer to pull out dents(or panelbeat for that matter) & not use a dolly on the inside(that panel sure did look pretty "loose' at some stages. I was cringing watching him wet sand bog, then also watching him paint, not using a water trap, his spray pattern etc, but hey, he got the job done! I'm still baffled that he used 2 drop sheets over the car during 'prep' then proceeded to paint the front bar AFTER polishing the car with only masking the corner?!
  • Chris Hall
Chris Hall 11 месяцев назад (изменено) rstreets I honestly didn't think it would last 2 and half years. That's a testament to Gerald's methods. I've seen professional body shops work fail in that time with your so-called "proper" methods. The average length of car ownership here in the US is roughly 6.5 years and something like 9 in Canada. If this panel was going to fail, it would have done it by now. You might have 30 years experience but Im right behind you with 24 which puts us both in the same generation of the body shop biz. You cant tell me something I dont already know, but you can always learn something from someone who dosent have the luxury of a professional shop.

Chris Hall 11 месяцев назад In Ed Jackson's defense, the sand scratch swelling is not visible at the distance those pics were taken, and honestly if you don't know what you're looking for, you will never see them. It takes a trained eye like mine or someone like Ed who has been in the industry for a while to see it. Pictures won't show it but closer observation in person will. I have some shrinkage on my car that I point out to people when they are looking at the quality of my paintwork, they usually respond with.."If you hadn't pointed that out I would have never seen it"
