Dungeon Master - the classic 16 bit dungeon crawler that defined a genre was one of the best ever games for the Atari ST and Commodore Amiga. Released in 1987 by FTL (Faster than Light) it saw many ports to different systems including the Sharp X68000, MS-DOS, Apple IIgs, Super Nintendo and more.

It also had one of the most devious floppy disk copy protection schemes ever created. In an age where most games were cracked in a matter of hours, FTL's clever protection took an entire year to crack with many attempts to defeat it, resulting in failure over and over again.

Francis Chin 1 месяц назад @TN_AU All 5.25 floppies were double sided, but some drives only had a single head; for using both sides in these you could either buy special flippy disks or make one by punching the case (not the disk inside) with an extra index hole and write-enable notch.

TN_AU 1 месяц назад @Christopher Howlett I think I had success I was very young and remember helping my older brother, I had little hands to hold the floppy disc while he drilled, and remembered games did work and some didnt :)
  • Christopher Howlett
Christopher Howlett 1 месяц назад @TN_AU Dont worry I wasnt being pedantic... did you have much success? When I got my first PC I tried it quite a bit with my old amiga disks but the data was so unstable I soon gave up!
  • TN_AU
TN_AU 1 месяц назад (изменено) @Christopher Howlett Yes your correct, it was so many years ago I forgot the correct wording for it.
  • Christopher Howlett
Christopher Howlett 1 месяц назад @TN_AU Yup... ! Although if you had to drill am guessing you meant turning 3.5" floppies into HD discs, which was horribly unreliable but did save money! The older 5..25" discs could be made DS by cutting a second notch.

  • TN_AU
TN_AU 1 месяц назад (изменено) Hands up who was so cheap that they used a drill to drill a hole on the other side of the floppy to make them double sided (or was it HD?) because double sided floppies was more expensive back in the day? Me: Raises ✋

  • Theiron2142
Theiron2142 2 недели назад @Isaac Cady The copying of games has never actually been proven to affect the profits of game developers. Making a copy of a game does not take away the developers ability to sell the game, taking a picture of a painting on sale in an art gallery and hanging that picture on the wall is not stealing the painting. The piracy of video games and other software is not equivalent to stealing just like j walking across the street is not equivalent to snatching an old lady's handbag.

Bon Bon 1 месяц назад (изменено) @P And they weren't wrong. Fast forward to 2019 and now pretty much everyone believes the opposite. To the point that the so-called "intellectual property rights" have started to undermine the actual physical property rights, the right to do with your own body whatever you want to do with it, etc. All those years of conditioning seems to work ;q

Butt Why?? 1 месяц назад @Agimaso Schandir lol
  • Agimaso Schandir
Agimaso Schandir 1 месяц назад @Butt Why?? Yeah, yeah. You don't have a point to make is the reality. That's not squirming, its shaking from another poster coping out in grand style. I suppose the point you are claiming to make is on a piece of paper you keep in your coat pocket. In this, I will Trump philosophy as advocated by Melania: "I don't care". My ego says this as well, but you supposedly knew that. Had a chance to show your intelligence but wimp out with a snow-milk excuse. My assumption is proving right. Tell you what though, don't wanta make you squirm and cry, and I can be gracious so I will give you another chance... what is your point?
  • Butt Why??
Butt Why?? 1 месяц назад @Agimaso Schandir nah, too fun to watch you squirm
  • Agimaso Schandir
Agimaso Schandir 1 месяц назад @Butt Why?? Cool. Then let me see if my assumption was right. What is the point? And... I have heard of a straw man, but a straw ego? I will have to say that is a first for me
  • Butt Why??
Butt Why?? 1 месяц назад @Agimaso Schandir it's almost fascinating how you continue missing the point so thoroughly yet your ego doesn't allow you to even begin to understand what is said
  • Agimaso Schandir
Agimaso Schandir 1 месяц назад @Butt Why?? Sorry, I appreciate admitting I need to explain it more simply. If you take something that belongs to someone else without permission, locked or not, it is called theft, not being honest. Let me know if I need to explain it even simpler, although for me that would be a challenge, I unfortunately, assume people are usually intelligent. I know there can be exceptions, but the saying was stated as a general rule
  • Butt Why??
Butt Why?? 1 месяц назад @Agimaso Schandir it's almost fascinating how you manage to write seemingly logical sentences that miss the point so thoroughly that they might as well consist of complete gibberish
  • Agimaso Schandir
Agimaso Schandir 1 месяц назад @bilibiliism The first part I agree with, but I grew up in a 3 billion population world, and you had neighbors that watched what you were doing. Not all 7 billion live in a small community were respect for a neighbor is possible, although admittedly deteriorating as cultures show no respect for each other
  • Agimaso Schandir
Agimaso Schandir 1 месяц назад @Butt Why?? I take it your grand father's; never been shot at, never been invited to someone's house, dislike's people that believe in that saying and, hopefully not applied that saying to people's pets and people
  • Butt Why??
Butt Why?? 1 месяц назад As my grandfather likes to say, "steal everything that's not locked and you'll live an honest life"
  • bilibiliism
bilibiliism 1 месяц назад @Agimaso Schandir Respect could only stop theft in pre-mordern period when human mobility was very low and people generally living in small closed community where everyone recognize and judge each other in day-to-day life. In modern day, unless you are respected by all 7 billions people in the world and aliens, no matter how respected you are in your community, someone from next town would come and screw you.
  • Agimaso Schandir
Agimaso Schandir 1 месяц назад @bilibiliism I respect you're right to say that, but that probably means nothing to you?
